How RankBrain Works: Google's Gary Illyes and Stone Temple's Eric Enge Discuss

05:55
Google's Gary Illyes and Stone Temple's Eric Enge Discuss RankBrain and What It Does and Doesn't Do at Pubcon Las Vegas in 2016. For more information, please visit pubcon.com and stonetemple.com/pubcon-keynote-with-gary-illyes-and-eric-enge-virtual-keynote/ Republished with permission from Pubcon Transcript: Eric: Awesome. All right, so we're gonna jump right in. And one of the things I wanna talk about, because everybody loves to hear about it, is RankBrain. Gary: That's great. Okay. Eric: What is it? All right, I'll ask the question differently, what does it do? Gary: RankBrain is a machine learning algorithm, deep machine learning algorithm, basically layered neural networks, and is trying to predict what would be a better result from a given result set based on historical data. It looks at a bunch of signals but essentially it adjusts ranking based on the query. It works really, really well with queries that we've never seen before for most... Eric: So long-tail queries. Gary: Yeah, long-tail queries. We typically use, in ranking, data collected for specific queries to decide how to rank results for a specific query. But if the query is new, then we don't have that data yet and that's where RankBrain excels. It can make predictions based on similar queries from the past, how to rank results. Eric: So is that because it's doing lAnguage analysis? Is it doing historical query analysis? What's the kind of stuff that's... Gary: I think you're going too deep here. It's doing many things. Eric: Many things? Gary: Yeah. Eric: Well, can we get a list? Gary: You could. Although no, you can't. Eric: It was originally discussed like it was primarily focused on query analysis. That's what I thought the original indications that people gave about what it did. But it sounds like there may be some other elements to it as well. Gary: It has multiple elements...or looking at a query and trying to predict what...or looking at a query and similar queries from the past is the main thing that it's doing. Eric: So if we were to geek out on that for a moment, it's recognizing similarity of queries based on high-dimensional vector space analysis and the proximity of one query to another. You all got that, right? So it hasn't taken over the entire algorithm? Gary: No. I can probably say that it will never take over the whole algorithm or the core algorithm. It's one of the components that we have in ranking and it's really just one of the hundreds of signals that we have. Eric: So it's not involved in links or local search or spam analysis? Gary: No. They may use their own machine learning algorithms but RankBrain specifically is only focusing on re-ranking based on query similarities. Eric: Right, okay. And the algorithm has been very successful for you? Gary: Yeah. It quickly became the third most important algorithm that we have in ranking. Eric: That's great. Third most, that's like a big number. Gary: Yes. It is a big number. That's because we have tons of long-tail queries. Eric: I'm sorry. Gary: We have tons of long-tail queries. So it's quite easy to become the third most important when you are working on long-tail queries. Eric: So this relates to something I heard a long time ago, which is that a very large percentage of queries that Google gets every day have never been seen before. And at one point, I forget who it was, somebody said it was as high as 20% or 25%. Is that coming down over time or... Gary: I don't know the exact number now. Eric: But, okay, so if it's responsible for something like 20% of the queries are very long tail or first time ever seen, that actually would be a lot of queries that RankBrain is actually acting on potentially? Gary: Yeah. Eric: I also had a conversation with a Google spokesperson that I can't name, it wasn't you. And what he told me is that it isn't that RankBrain is only applied to certain queries, it's actually present all the time. It just only has an impact on certain queries, isn't it? Gary: Yeah. So if you think about it, RankBrain is part of the core algorithm. The core algorithm works on every single query and then the many components that we have in the core algorithm, we'll try to make a decision whether they should do something or not. RankBrain is one of those. It looks at the query and it decides that, "Okay, I have nothing to do here. It's already ranked pretty well, so I will not do anything." And in long-tail cases, it will make adjustments to the result set, the already ranked result set.

Why Machine Learning Is Revolutionizing Search

05:27
In this week's episode of Here's Why, Mark Traphagen asks Stone Temple Consulting CEO, Eric Enge, to tell us why machine learning is such a revolution, and what it means for the future of search! Links Referenced: The Machine Learning Revolution: How It Works and Its Impact on SEO https://moz.com/blog/machine-learning-revolution The Stone Temple Twitter Engagement Preditor: http://www.retweetpredict.com/ Complete Here's Why video archive: http://www.stonet.co/HeresWhyArchive Mark: So Eric, before we dig into what machine learning is and how it will affect search and SEO, you told me that you've gone extra deep into this topic. Tell our viewers about that. Eric: Sure. When I realized just how big machine learning is becoming for Google and others, I decided I needed to know it from the inside out literally. So I enrolled in a university level course in machine learning and went on to start writing my own machine learning programs. One of those is actually included in the article I wrote for the Moz Blog. Mark: Okay, yeah, that's sure going deep. Speaking of your Moz article, you do a really thorough job of explaining what machine learning is and how it will impact SEO. Now can you summarize that for those viewing today? Eric: Sure, happy to do that. At a simple level, machine learning is a class of algorithms that enable computers to learn from a feedback loop of information. The computers then, in a sense, alter their own programming in response to what they learned. Mark: So what's an example of how that could be put to use? Eric: Well, one of the first applications that I learned about came out in an interview I did with Google's Peter Norvig back in 2011. Peter told me that when Google wanted to build Google Translate, they found examples of material on the web already translated into various languages, fed that into a machine learning algorithm, let the machine figure out the principals of translations between the various languages. Mark: Wow, that sounds incredibly complex. Eric: It was, but now in 2016, Google and other companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook are using machine learning for all kinds of applications. Mark: And you mentioned before that you created your own machine learning based program. Tell us about that. Eric: Well yes, I used what I learned in the course by Andrew Ng, I hope I pronounced that right, of Stanford University. And I used data from our own study of what causes engagement on Twitter combined with social authority metrics from Moz's Followerwonk tool to build the Twitter Engagement Predictor. Given the Followerwonk social authority of the tweeter and how many of the various features she or he has used in the tweet, things such as images and the like, the program predicts the probability of the tweet getting a retweet. Mark: Now let's move on to how machine learning is affecting SEO. Eric: Well, I think a prime concern at Google is the quality of search results. By that I mean when a user clicks through to a site from a Google result, how good and how satisfying is that result? Does it quickly and effectively give the user what he or she was looking for? Does it anticipate other related needs the user might have? Does it deliver all of that in a fast and easy to understand manner? Of course, quality of results has always been important to Google. What's different now is that I think they are using machine learning in things like the Penguin and Panda updates as well as other search quality algorithms to be able to better than ever really tell if a human would think a web page is the best possible result for their query. Mark: And the implications of that for anyone doing site SEO should be obvious, I would hope. Eric: Indeed. Now more than ever, you've got to be focused on user intent, related intentions the user might have, and identifying gaps in your content, and how your quality compares to your competitors for the same query, and how you're measuring and iterating page improvements for the future. Mark: Well, thanks, Eric. There is a lot more and I mean a lot more about how machine learning works and the practical implications for our SEO at your Moz article.

Why You Should Think Mobile First

04:47
In this episode, we'll explain what the mobile first approach to web design means, and why you should consider adopting it! Links mentioned: https://www.stonetemple.com/everything-mobile-google-john-mueller-mariya-moeva/ Mark: So, Eric. In one of our virtual keynote live interviews with main Google staffers, you chatted with John Mueller and Mariya Moeva about all things mobile, including mobile-first mindset. So, that discussion started with defining what Google means by “mobile friendly.” Explain that if you would. Eric: Sure. Google Webmaster Trends analyst John Mueller told us that, to Google, mobile friendly means not only can users see the same content from your site on a mobile device, but they can have as good an experience with your site as they would on the desktop version. Mark: So, in other words, they shouldn’t feel like they have to switch over to a desktop version of your site to do whatever it is they want to do on your site. Eric: Right. That might be navigating to other content or pages on your site, the ability to buy something, easily finding related items, filling out a form, or any of the kinds of things people normally do on a desktop website. And of course, the content should be easy to read on a smaller mobile device. Mark: And John emphasized to us that, given the increasing number of people that either mostly or entirely access the web on mobile, site owners ought to be shifting to a mobile-first mindset. Now, what does that mean? Eric: Mobile-first means not just creating a mobile version of your desktop site, or even making your desktop site responsive to mobile devices, but thinking of your whole design from the mobile point of view. Mark: Okay. So, why would you do that? Eric: Well, first of all, as more and more web traffic moves to mobile devices, it just makes sense to give mobile priority, but there’s more to it than that. Thinking in terms of designing for mobile devices forces you to design more cleanly, more simply, in ways that will probably benefit your desktop users as well. On mobile, you’ve got to keep the user interface clear and direct because desktop gives you too much real estate to play with and allows for almost infinite number of bells and whistles that you can add to a site. Too many sites have become sloppy and difficult to use. Mobile first pushes us back to a better user experience, which means happier users. Mark: And happy users stay longer and come back again. Eric: Precisely. In fact, John Mueller told us that this is what Google is doing themselves. For many of their web products now, the engineers and designers actually start with the mobile mock-ups. Everything is designed, tested, and improved in a mobile format first. It’s only then that they adapt the design to desktop. Mark: So it really is a whole change in mindset. I mean, pretty cool that mobile first makes our sites not only better for an increasingly mobile world, but also better for all our users, even those on desktop.

Here's Why SEO Takes Time

05:18
Well done SEO can reap huge benefits for a site as it brings large amounts of highly targeted traffic to just the right landing pages. You can't blame a site owner for wanting that traffic as soon as possible but in reality, getting to those results can take a long time and its impossible to predict how long. Sometimes the change or correction to a site can bring dramatic results almost right away, but typically it can take many weeks or even months before improvement is seen. Therefore, anyone guaranteeing you quick results is frankly probably lying to you to get your business. In this episode of Here's Why, we will explain why it is that SEO takes time, but it's worth the wait.
