The West Creston Fire Protection crew answered a 4:50 pm alarm to combat a grass fire north of Highway 3 at West Creston Road. 16 volunteers responded and extinguished the fire.

Cause: Unknown but arson suspected.

The West Creston Fire Protection crew answered a 4:45 pm alarm to combat a grass fire along Highway 3 on the Creston side of the Kootenay River bridge. Several volunteers responded but the Creston Fire Department took control and extinguished the fire.

Cause: The fire was intentionally started.



Thursday, October 20, 2011

A resident reported an unattended wood fire on West Creston Road near the gas line.

A couple of volunteers responded to the call and extinguished the small fire. A previous slash burn area in the forest was deemed out but an adjacent log ignited. Volunteers soaked down the log and area.

Cause: Improper extinguishing a previous burn pile.

A call was received to report a grass fire on south West Creston Road.

Local volunteers and a BC Forestry rep responded to the call to find a fire on a hay baler which ignited some grass in the field. The fire was extinguished by the farmer working the field as volunteers arrived.

Cause: Mechanical failure on hay baler.

A call was received to report a lightning strike above Evans Road.

A couple of volunteers responded to the call and hiked part way up the mountain and found the area inaccessable. No further action was necessary as the rain took care of the blaze.

Cause: Lightning strike.


Friday, July 30, 2010

Three calls were turned in at approx. 6:30 PM to report a lightning strike on Creston Mountain above Evans Road.

Several volunteers responded to the calls but no action was necessary as BC Forestry confirmed their control of the incident. A BC Forestry representative was monitoring the fire and the rain took care of the blaze. The RCMP were also notified of the incident.

Cause: Lightning strike.


Saturday, June 19, 2010

The West Creston Fire Protection crew answered a call at 4:25 am to attend a fire on Reclamation Road near Hansen's Farms. 13 volunteers and 4 units responded and found the remains of some smouldering hay. No action was necessary. The RCMP were on site.

Cause: Unknown.


Monday, April 12, 2010

The West Creston Fire Protection crew were called out at 9:30 pm to attend a chimney fire at a residence on Peterman Road.

Although this structural fire was outside of the training and scope of work, several volunteers did respond only to find that the fire had been extinguished by local residents.

Cause: Chimney fire.


Saturday, March 20, 2010

A call was received by one of the members mid-morning to assist with a structural fire near Mugwumps. A hayshed and equipment were engulfed in flames when the members arrived.

There was no official call was placed for assistance.

Later that evening, a unit was called in to extinguish a hotspot which had potential to threaten a local residence.

Cause: A local resident was burning grass on this property and the fire spread to the hayshed on adjacent land.


Sunday, March 21, 2010 (and throughout the following week)

The West Creston Fire Protection crew were again called at 7:30 pm to attend another grass fire along Nick's Island Road. Several volunteers responded and extinguished the fire. A rash of fires were reported each day throughout the week at this location. The RCMP were called in to investigate the arson.

Cause: The fire was delibrately set by the local "firebug" who apparently starts the fires in this area every year for mushroom picking reasons.

The West Creston Fire Protection crew answered a 9:30 pm alarm from the RCMP to combat a grass and tree fire along Nick's Island Road near the new bridge. Several volunteers responded and extinguished the fire.

Cause: The fire was delibrately set.



Monday, December 14, 2009

A call was received by one of the members shortly before noon to assist with a structural fire at Ziola's farm.

Although the Society's equipment and phone system were down for the winter, 15 volunteers answered the call but were unable to provide much assistance as the building was totally engulfed in flames.

Even though a stuctural fire was outside of the Society's wildfire training and scope of work, several volunteers helped to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings, and by using the 2 Remote Tank Units were able to haul water and hose down those surrounding areas and cool the fire.

Cause: The cause is unknown.


Tuesday, August 25, 2009

The West Creston Fire Protection crew were called out at about 8.00 PM to attend to a bonfire at a residence on Teetzel Road. A BC Forestry Fire Ban was in place.

Cause: The resident, apparenty unaware of the BC Forestry fire ban, was burning a pile of debris and caused some concern to the neighbourhood.

At the request of a neighbour, the property owner extinguished the fire before the fire crew arrived.

The West Creston Fire Protection crew answered an alarm at about 4:20 PM to extinguish a fire between Simmons and Peterman roads. Fortunately the owner of the property extinguished their own fire before the crew arrived.

Cause: Although a fire ban was in place, a resident lit a debris pile causing lots of smoke and great concern in the neighbourhood.

The West Creston Fire Protection crew were put on alert in late afternoon after a report of a lightning strike above Evans Road.

Due to the location of the strike and the terrain involved, BC Forestry were notified for assistance.

The fire was being closely monitored. A team planned to hike up to the location early the next morning with the necessary equipment to extinguish the fire. Meanwhile, a group of concerned residents did hike up, cut down the burning snag and extinguished the fire.

Thanks to those Community minded residents who acted on what may have turned out to be a large fire in our area.

The West Creston Fire Protection crew answered a distress call at about 8:30 PM, to assist in finding a lost person on the Wildlife property. An individual from USA was one hour overdue for a scheduled rondevous to the Wildlife Center.

A number of volunteers answered the call along with the RCMP.

Fortunately the individual was located near the Wildlife Center before the volunteers spent a lot of time searching.

Although search and rescue is outside of our mandate, we provided a number of volunteers in a short time at a time of distress. The US visitors were very appreciative of the effort given but our community.

The West Creston Fire Protection crew answered a 2:50 pm alarm to combat a grass fire along Nick's Island Road near the new bridge. Two units and several volunteers responded and extinguished the fire without too much difficulty.

Cause: Although the cause can not be verified, it is believed to be started by the local "firebug" who intentionally starts a fire in this area every year.
